Thomas George Scannell

November 12, 1929 — November 17, 2021

The Lord came and wrapped his loving arms around Thomas G. Scannell, 92, of Fond du Lac to take him home on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. He was born on November 12, 1929, in Fond du Lac, the son of George and Viola (nee Merjay) Scannell. On April 2, 1951, Tom married Marcella “Sis” Goebel at St. Michaels’s Catholic Church in Dotyville. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. In his younger years, Tom worked alongside his Dad and brothers at the family cheese factory. Having nine mouths to feed he always worked more than one job. He especially enjoyed driving semi-trucks for various milk transport companies. Tom worked for the Fond du Lac County Highway Department for many years holding various positions and retired as a Supervisor.  He was a member of the Fond du Lac VFW, the Knights of Columbus, and Evening Optimists, Tom was instrumental in forming the Fond du Lac Youth Baseball Complex and Babe Ruth Baseball, he also coached for many years. Tom was a longtime usher at St. Joseph’s and Holy Family Church. Most important to Tom was his family, he loved it most when everyone gathered at his home for their Sunday night dinners, noise and chaos made him happy. Tom could always be spotted in the stands supporting his children and grandchildren in all their activities. Tom had a lifelong passion for woodworking; he built barns, doll houses, trucks, semi-tractor trailers, benches, wheelbarrows, etc. Tom passed these woodworking talents onto his sons and grandsons. Tom looked forward to his special morning breakfasts and lunches with family and friends that were so dear to him.

They say the measure of a person is how much they love and are loved. Tom’s life was full and happy, especially by this measure, and his legacy is the love and happiness that he handed down to those close to him. This world is better for having had him in it.

Those left behind to cherish his memory include his sons John (Carla) Scannell, Tom (Marie) Scannell and George (Anne) Scannell, daughters Sandra Schaefer, Linda (Pat) Lloyd, Mary (Steve) Gueller, Gail (Scott) Wustrack and Jennifer (John) Dilling, son-in-law Charles Sosinski, grandchildren April Dowden, James, and CJ Sosinski, Rebecca Smith, Alexa Williams, Erin Mitchell, Tim Lloyd, Matt Scannell, Vicki Neumann, Eric, Mitchell and Ryan Gueller, Colin and Mickey Scannell, Elizabeth and Hannah Wustrack, Jake, Zach and Olivia Dilling, step grandchildren; Marie McCormick, Jenni Hutchinson, Willie Moran and many others who called him “Grandpa”, 30 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, his loving companion; Barb Michels (and her family), sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Bernice “Bunny” Scannell, Betty Scannell, Alice Braatz, Jim (MaryAnn) Goebel and Shirley Goebel, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
