Melvin E. Del Ponte, 95, formerly of Campbellsport, went to his heavenly home on October 13, 2022, at St. Francis Home in Fond du Lac. He was born near Lomira on July 29, 1927, the son of the late John Battiste and Appolonia (Dalle Nogare) Del Ponte. On July 10, 1954, Melvin married Roseann Roltgen at Our Lady of Angels Church in Armstrong. They farmed together in the Town of Auburn.
Despite being severely injured in a farming accident as a teenager, Melvin went on to be recognized as an Outstanding Young Farmer of Fond du Lac County. In addition, he built one of the state’s top producing dairy herds. In later years he repaired and refinished furniture.
Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing and was meticulous in everything he did especially when creating fine wood heirlooms that will be treasured by his family for generations. He also made a number of furnishings for St. Matthew Church where he was active in various roles.
He cherished his family and friends and was always there to lend a hand and share some wit and wisdom. He will be greatly missed.
His wife Roseann preceded him in death. Those left behind to cherish his memory include his children Paula (Dale) Brath, David (Sue) Del Ponte, Patrick (Ann) Del Ponte, Ray (Linda) Del Ponte, and Peggy (Tom) Gerrits, daughter-in-law Holly Del Ponte, 20 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his brothers-in-law John (Monica) Roltgen, Dan (Carol) Roltgen, Jim (Mary) Roltgen, Joe Schiek and Bill (Bonnie) Roltgen, and sister-in-law Therese (Richard) Burns, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Melvin was preceded in death by his son Michael, his brothers John Battiste Jr., Peter, Tranquillo, Dante, and Victor Del Ponte, and sisters Mary Marini, Anna Guse, Erna Kregel, Caroline Johnston, Nella Del Ponte, and his sister-in-law Geraldine Schiek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 21st at 6:00 PM at St. Matthew Church, 406 E. Main St. Campbellsport, with visitation from 4:00 PM until the time of mass at the church. Rev. Neil Zinthefer will officiate, and burial will be in St. Matthew Cemetery.
