Kenneth H. Schaefer, 90, Ashford, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021 at St. Francis Home in Fond du Lac.
Dad was born on the family farm near Mount Calvary February 27, 1931. He was the first child born to Henry and Mildred (Lefeber) Schaefer. He attended Mount Calvary Catholic Grade School.
At the age of 20, Dad enlisted in the Army and successfully completed the Basic Airborne Course and was rated as a qualified Parachutist. He was stationed to South Korea to serve in the Korean Conflict. He was seriously wounded shortly after arriving and spent the next year in several military hospitals before finally returning to the USA. He was discharged as a PFC (E-3).
On May 1, 1954, He married Catalina “Katie” Hernandez at Presentation Parish in North Fond du Lac.
Dad spent several years working for area farmers before he began working in the cheese making industry. He started at Tolibia Cheese in Fond du Lac and worked most of his life for Stella Cheese in Campbellsport.
He was very proud of his home. He bought 3 acres of raw land and with the help of his family and friends he built a home, dug a pond, grew a large garden and raised every animal a homesteader could. His real passion though was participating in the American Legion, VFW and DAV. He and his good friend Dieter could be found placing several hundred flags on military graves for major holidays.
Survivors include his 3 sons Martin (Debra) Schaefer and Allan (Cheryl) Schaefer of Fond du Lac and Kenneth Schaefer, Jr. of Green Bay; grandchildren Jennifer (Makies) Gavrielatos, Erik (Hannah Hooper) Schaefer, Molly (Delton) Bongel, Bobbie Jo Schaefer (Adam Doyle), Curt (Danielle) Schaefer, Brad (Heather) Schaefer and Ashley Schaefer; and 11 great grandchildren Chloe, Austin, Bailey, Ariana, Cameron, Aiden, Lila, Higen, Eva, Henry and Kosta. He is also survived by his sisters Shirley Boeder, Lorna (Harry) Ribbke, Nancy Struck and Barb Schaefer and brothers David (Doris) Schaefer, Gerald (Rosemary) Schaefer and Harold (Mary Jane) Schaefer.
Dad was preceded in death by his wife Katie, son Jesse, daughter-in-law Tracey, parents and brother Allan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 17th at 10:30 am at St. Martin’s Chapel, Ashford (N1271 Minnie Lane, Campbellsport). Rev. Mark Jones will officiate.
