Joan Marie (Wimberger) McEnroe, 87, of Fond du Lac passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024 in her home surrounded by loved ones after a lifetime of enriching the lives of countless others. Joan was born in Milwaukee on December 9, 1936, the daughter of the late Claude and Gertrude (Hau) Wimberger. Joan graduated from Saint Mary’s Springs Academy and Marian College. On June 14, 1958, she married Lawrence Edward “Ed” McEnroe II at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eden. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Marblehead before they began their family, and then provided a nurturing home for their seven children. With their children grown, Joan and Ed moved back to Wisconsin and owned and operated Norwood Resort in Rhinelander for 25 years. Ultimately she returned to her roots, moving to Fond du Lac where she was able to spend much of her time visiting with the extended family she held so dear. She was well known for sending hundreds of greeting cards each year to celebrate every birthday and anniversary in that extended family as well as her circle of friends. She was a devout Catholic and active participant in several church groups and freely donated her time and talents.
Joan was the beloved wife of the late Ed McEnroe, and devoted mother of Lawrence Edward “Larry” McEnroe III (Celia), Julie Anne Jacobs (John), Michael James McEnroe (Addy), Catherine Joan Donovan (Will), Patrick David McEnroe (Valerie), Lisa Marie LaPorte (David), and Elizabeth Rose McEnroe (Paul), dear grandmother of Ed, John, Caitlin, Patrick, Adam, Meghan, Erin, Kelly, Matthew, Kyla, Josh, Ryan, Benjamin, Liz, and Ada and great-grandmother of Lucy, Leo, and Kaleigh. She is survived by her sisters Ruth (John) McEnroe, Mary (Dick) Sadoff, Marcy (Denny) Loehr, and Jeanne (Frank) Nett, and brothers Jim (Sue) Wimberger and Joe (Jane) Wimberger as well as sisters and brothers-in-law: Patty (Bill) Ales, John (Ruth) McEnroe, Pat (Mary) McEnroe and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ed, her sisters-in-law Kathleen Winkel, Rosemary Berg and Mary McEnroe and brothers-in-law Bill Berg, Bert Winkel, Bill Ales, Dick Sadoff, Denny Loehr and Frank Nett.
