James Leroy Durand

Jim “The Barber” Durand was called to eternal life on Thursday, October 20, 2022 with his family by his side.

Jim was brought into this life on December 8, 1935, by Ernest and Mary Durand (the granddaughter of the Cattle baron of Iowa). Jim was known in Iowa as Jimmy “DU” rand from “DU” mont. He spent his youth in Dumont, IA riding dirt bikes, playing baseball and basketball, fishing by the river with his Uncle Floyd, and raising hell.

He graduated from Dumont High School and earned the class superlative of “ Best Physique.”   Jim decided that farm life was not for him, and enlisted in the U.S. Marines. He served his country before moving to California, where he met his wife, Patricia “Reinke” Durand.

Jim and Patricia were married at Our Lady of Sorrow parish in Milwaukee on May 7, 1960. A marriage that would last for 62 years, where they were blessed with eight children, Scott (Carla) Durand, Sandy (Tim) Sarauer, Sue Durand, Sheri Durand, Stacey Durand, Steve (Kelly) Durand, Sean (Jennifer) Durand and Sam (Kim) Durand. Jim and Pat have 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will carry on his legacy.

Jim’s passion in life was barbering. He started his barber career when he bought a barbershop with his Dad in Arizona in 1963.  He continued his career when they moved to Milwaukee and partnered with his friend “Rusty” at the Butler Barber Shop. He spent many years at the Butler Barber Shop handing out tootsie rolls and letting his kids run across the street to buy pixie stix and candy to keep them busy while his magic shears were at work.

In 1972, Jim and Pat moved to Campbellsport, where he opened Jim’s Clip Joint. Behind the chair, Jim had a knack for telling stories about his family, travels, gambling successes, and many of his jokes (both good and bad). His favorite joke was the “meatball” joke. We have no doubt his barber shop will continue in its new location upstairs!

Jim finished his career as a salesman for Roffler Industries selling barber supplies and then moved into insurance sales at Rural Insurance and lastly, at Ernie Von Schledorn.

Outside of barbering and raising his family, Jim lived the good life dancing the jitterbug, having backyard parties, being a Scout leader for his kids, and always being there to support his family  in any way he could.

Jim will be reunited in death with his sister, Norma; his parents, Ernest and Mary Durand; his mother and father-in-law, Ed & Helen Reinke; niece LeAnn; his brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Audrey Schmitz; and his nephew, Robert Schmitz.

Join us in sharing his life story and jokes on Sunday, October 30, at St. Matthew Church, 406 E. Main St. Campbellsport, as we “salute” Jim “The Barber” into eternal life. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM, with a Mass following at 4:00 PM.
