Joseph Murphy passed away on Tuesday Nov. 4, 2008 at his home in Kewaskum, WI. Joe was born on March 19, 1921 in Neshkoro, WI, son of John and Rose Bednarek Murphy. After graduating from Princeton, WI High School in the class of 1938, he attended UW Madison Agricultural Short Course in 1939. He entered the US Army Corp on August 25, 1942, serving until October 20, 1945. He served in China, Burma, and India as a radio operator-Gunner completing 40 combat missions. On returning to Scottfield, IL, he was a radio operator mechanics instructor. He was awarded the Good Conduct Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. He married Harriet Stanchfield on November 27, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fond du Lac, WI. Together they farmed in Fond Du Lac County for 35 years. He loved his family and his farm and was a devoted husband. He enjoyed playing cards and was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a 4th Degree member of Council #664 of Fond du Lac, member of the American Legion Post #347 of Lomira, the 22nd Bomb Squadron Association, a former 4-H leader and member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church of Ashford. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Harriet, his children, Katherine Murphy (Howard Mezera) of Oshkosh, Patrick (Charlotte) Murphy of Boyers, PA, Maureen (Paul) Mezera of Campbellsport, William Murphy of Fond du Lac, and Phillip (Susan) Murphy of Campbellsport, 5 grandchildren, Molly, Beth, Megan, Michael and Billy, 2 great-granddaughters, Emma and Madison and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Murphy and Jeanette Murphy of Princeton, WI, Phylis Murphy of Waukesha, Ann Stanchfield, Virginia Willis and Ruth Smith of Fond, du Lac, brothers in-law Victor Mashuda of Cranberry Twp., PA, and George (Carol) Stanchfield of Fond du Lac, WI. Preceding him in death was one son, Daniel, his parents, four brothers, Arthur, John, Sylvester and Edward, and three sisters Madeline, Alice and Rosemary. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday Nov. 7th at 1:00 PM at St. Martin Catholic Church, Ashford (N1271 Minnie Lane, Campbellsport) with Father Neil Zinthefer officiating and burial at Ledgeview Memorial Park in Fond du Lac, in the Veteran’s Garden of Valor. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 AM until time of mass at the church The family would like to thank all the staff and especially Dr. Jella of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, Slinger, WI for all of the compassionate care given to Joe in his three year battle with leukemia.
