Gerald “Jerry” Raymond Schanen of Campbellsport passed away Friday, January 15, 2010 after a long and courgeous battle with cancer. Jerry was born on Feb. 11, 1929 in Port Washington, WI, the son of Edward and Cecelia (Lorge) Schanen. He graduated from Port Washington High School and attended Marquette University. Jerry also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On January 18, 1953 Jerry married Ruby Flora Parker at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Americus, GA Jerry started his career in retail at the Ben Franklin Store in Port Washington. In 1965 he and Flora purchased the Ben Franklin Store in Campbellsport and in 1986 opened a second store in Mayville, WI. In the spring you would still find him active in the stores’ lawn and garden centers. Jerry was actively involved in numerous community organizations throughout his adult life. He was a former member of the Port Washington Jaycees, Campbellsport Lion’s Club and the Campbellsport Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as President for many years. He was a charter member of the Friends of the Kettle Moraine, Northern Chapter. He also served St Matthew’s Catholic Church in Campbellsport as a lector, communion minister and chairman of the Fall Festival for many years. Jerry also served on the Board of Directors for Bank One Campbellsport and Fond du Lac. Jerry and Flora wintered in Wildwood, Florida and enjoyed every minute of it! He was very active in his retirement community and served on the Board of Directors for Rails End Mobile Home and RV Park until his death. Jerry was a gentle, fun-loving, good natured man with a warm smile and a deep curiosity about life. He was absolutely, positively passionate about the game of golf and played as often as possible. He participated in many area golf leagues and was a founding member of the Tuesday night Golf & Sheepshead gang at Knickel’s Indian Trails Golf Course. Jerry is survived by his wife Flora and his five children: Christopher (Barbara) Schanen, Michael (Christine) Schanen and David (Traci) Schanen of Campbellsport; Susan (Brian) Perry of Mayville and Jane (Keith) Helmrick of Plover, WI. He is further survived by his thirteen grandchildren: Stephanie (Jesse) Ohms, Rebecca (Erick) Bennett, Katie Schanen, Jennifer (Christopher) Rider, Stacy (Max) Nunez, Derick Schanen, Justin Perry, Nicholas Perry; Jacqueline Helmrick, Michael Helmrick; Terri Schanen, Kasey Schanen(special friend, Sarah) and Alyssa Schanen. Four great grandchildren: Parker Schanen, Kianna & Gabriel Schanen and Aiden Ohms. Four sisters: Lucille Poytinger, Arline Barrian both of Brookfield, Janet (Art) Kabelowski of Sussex and Bernice Hansen of Utah and a brother Lyle of Sheboygan. He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers-in-law. Memorials may be made to St Matthew's Catholic Church, Campbellsport, St. Agnes Hospice Hope or Friends of the Kettle Moraine. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday January 19 at 7:00 PM at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Campbellsport. Rev. Neil Zinthefer will officiate and burial will be Wed. in St. Matthew’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:30 PM until time of mass at the church.
