Donald Lee Johnson

August 14, 1938 — February 13, 2012

Donald L. Johnson, 73, of Grafton passed away suddenly on Feb. 13, 2012 while on vacation in Orange Beach, Alabama. He was born on Aug. 14th, 1938 in Campbellsport the son of Harold C. and Doris Mae (nee Wrucke) Johnson. Donnie attended school in Campbellsport and in 1956 he entered the U. S. Army serving until 1959. On Sept. 17, 1960, he was united in marriage to LaVerne Hammen at the Reform Church in Campbellsport. Donnie and Laverne moved to Grafton in 1966 and became members at Pilgrim United Church of Christ. He worked at the Gehl Company for 33 years and took an early retirement. Donnie managed his sons’ Mid Ozaukee Softball Team and the became the manager of the first Little League traveling team playing their games in the northern Milwaukee district and winning the league championship. He enjoyed softball, bowling, gardening and he loved doing his sudokos. He and his wife were avid walkers for many years. Donnie was very proud of and dedicated to his grandchildren; he tried to attend all their activities. Survivors include his wife LaVerne, his children Tim (Jane) of Germantown, Terry (Denise) of Waukesha, Donna (Jack) Wendtlandt of Grafton and Deb (Jim “Tiny”) Mayer of Grafton and his grandchildren Andrew (Candice), Evan, Amy, Jake and Brianna Johnson, Jamie and Justin Wendtlandt and Miles and Dylan Mayer. He is further survived by his sisters Millie Kreif of West Bend, Fern Krief of Kewaskum, Darlene Shaudvitis of Fond du Lac and Evelyn DeSchmidt of West Bend, his brother George (Dorothy) Johnson of Sebring, Florida, his sister-in-law Ernie Hammen of Campbellsport, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, many friends and special neighbor and friend John. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Lester and Florence Hammen, his brother Norman Johnson, his sisters Faye Wallenfelz and Lois Straub and seven brothers-in-law. Donnie was cremated in Alabama and a memorial service will be held on Thursday March 1st at 6:00 PM at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 1621 Second Ave. Grafton. Rev. Franz Rigert will officiate. Visitation will be on Thursday March 1st from 4:00 PM until time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Pilgrim UCC or the charity of your choice.
