Thomas E. Soper, M.D. Thomas E. Soper, 49, died August 6, 2012, in a diving accident near his home in Minocqua, Wisconsin. A small get-together in his honor was held at the family’s home in Minocqua on August 18, 2012. Tommy was born in Evanston, Illinois on April 9, 1963, to Thomas G. and Julie K. Soper. He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1981 and from Kalamazoo College, Michigan, with a BA in Psychology. He earned his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean- School of Medicine. After obtaining licensure in Wisconsin, he worked at the Peter Christensen Health Center in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, as a staff physician. In addition to helping the patients he cared for, he greatly enjoyed teaching them about their conditions so that they could take greater personal responsibility for their own health care management. Tommy was known for his ability to accomplish anything he set his mind to, particularly as it related to mechanical projects. At an early age he was able to take apart and rebuild an automobile engine. One of his favorite projects was to completely rebuild an old 911 Porsche. Tommy had a contagious optimism and love of life. He had a passion for the outdoors and his time in the Minocqua area allowed him to enjoy many of his favorite activities including waterskiing, snowmobiling, snow skiing and fishing. He is survived by his father, Thomas G. (Joan) Soper, M.D., Evanston, Il.; his sister, Carolyn (Charles) Stearns; his nephews Charlie and Stephen and his niece Katie, Wilmette, Il.; his brother Stephen L. Soper, Evanston, Il.; as well as loving aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends, colleagues and patients. He was preceded in death by his mother, Julie Soper.
